New Zealand Diploma in Dance (Level 6)

The New Zealand Diploma in Dance (Level 6) is a two-year course that equips students for a performance career in dance.

Upon completion, graduates will be prepared and ready to enter either a third year working towards a New Zealand School of Dance Diploma in Dance Performance (at Level 7), or their first professional industry placement.

The classical programme consists of classical ballet technique, contemporary dance technique, pas de deux, classical variations and pointe. Separate male and female classes.

The contemporary programme consists of contemporary dance technique, classical ballet technique, contemporary repertoire, partnering, yoga, choreographic practice and improvisation.

The NZ Diploma in Dance (Level 6) includes a strong choreographic component for both contemporary dance and classical ballet students along with a focus on professional development and self-management.

This new qualification includes credits covering Tikanga Māori, Māori history, language and culture, and Haka Pōwhiri, complimenting the practical training in ballet and contemporary dance that the School excels in.

Students also study academic subjects that complement their time in the studio: nutrition; dance history; anatomy and physiology and music studies.

Performance opportunities are provided throughout the year, such as in the School’s studio performances, Choreographic Season and Performance Season.

Students must have completed the Level 6 Diploma before enrolling in the Diploma in Dance Performance, one additional year of study.
