The David Carson-Parker and Jeremy Commons Studios

For almost sixty years, the New Zealand School of Dance has built a legacy of producing world-class dancers, right here in Wellington.

We haven't done it alone. The generous support of Friends and Patrons has sustained our success and empowered our talented students to pursue their dreams.

As our sixtieth anniversary approaches, we turn our eyes toward the future of NZSD and consider how we can best uplift our young dancers and the larger dance community in New Zealand.

In order to better serve our students, we've embarked upon an ambitious and exciting new project, formerly called the Black Box Studios: two new, state-of-the-art interconnected studios purpose-built to meet the needs of our dancers and our community.

And thanks to the extraordinary generosity of two longtime supporters, these new studios now have a name and an expedited construction schedule.

Jeremy Commons and the estate of the late David Carson-Parker have committed $250,000 to the construction of these studios. Jeremy and David have been dedicated supporters of the arts in New Zealand for many years. Together, they established an annual scholarship for students at NZSD in 2012. Jeremy maintained the scholarship on David's passing.

In honour of their unwavering friendship to the School, the studios will be named the David Carson-Parker and Jeremy Commons Studios.

These studios will feature specialised floors for dance, as well as customised lighting and audio and a retractable seating block that will seat 144 audience members. The studios will also serve as a community resource for arts practitioners, and can be hired out for events and performances.

We expect to open the studios in 2027, to coincide with our 60th anniversary.

You can be a part of it - literally - by adding a name to our Wall of Honour or on a seat in the studios' theatre.

Your donation will help expedite the construction of this exciting new project, and you'll be recognised as a steadfast patron of the New Zealand School of Dance for generations to come. With your investment, you can honour a loved one, share your love of dance, or dedicate the studios to the dancer in your life.

Mark your place in our history by donating to the studio construction campaign today.
