Graduate Sacha Copland is artistic director of Java Dance. She recently led this company of NZSD graduates, and current student Demi-Jo Manalo on secondment, to perform their show ‘Back of the Bus’ at Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

“We have had the most amazing time here in Edinburgh. Demi did a fantastic job and showed great stamina.

Our season at the largest arts festival on earth couldn’t have gone better. We sold out 34 shows in advance and had to add another 3. We ended up using the recommended 10,000 flyers we got printed as door stops. The show got 5 star reviews from Broadway Baby and Dark Chatter and 4 star reviews from The Scotsman, Mumble and Fringeguru.

We have had interest in touring the show to the UK from Dance Exchange, Winchester Theatre Royal, The Touring Networks in Scotland and Wales and an agent who I am meeting in Leeds tomorrow. I also got offered a 3 year job in the UK but I love NZ too much! I’d rather bring shows over but stay based in Wellington.

I have to say that being over here highlights how great the NZSD training is. NZSD dancers are so fabulously athletic!

Here’s a castle photo from beautiful rainy Edinburgh.

Looking forward to coming home in a week.
